Softball stumbles at No. 7 ETBU

MARSHALL, Texas – McMurry University Softball faced its first ranked opponent of the 2022 season Friday, falling to No. 7 East Texas Baptist in both games of an American Southwest Conference doubleheader in Marshall, Texas.

After McMurry took two of three in last season's series at Edwards Field – the program's first series win over a ranked opponent – the Tigers got their revenge and clinched the series Friday in Marshall.

The War Hawks drop to 13-8 overall and 7-6 in the ASC, while the Tigers improve to 17-5 overall and 11-3 in conference play.

Game 1: ETBU 8, McMurry 0 (5 innings)

ETBU pitcher Hannah Kelley limited McMurry's offense to one hit in the opener, as the Tigers won 8-0 in five innings.

McMurry's lone hit came from Brianna Martinez, a leadoff single in the top of the fifth.

With the victory, the Tigers extended their win streak to seven games for the time being.

Game 2: ETBU 10, McMurry 3

The War Hawks struck first in game two as Kayla Otis grounded home a run with the bases loaded, but McMurry was unable to retain the lead in a 10-3 nightcap final.

One of the most productive offensives in the nation, ETBU took the lead in the bottom of the second with four runs and never lost the lead again.

Despite the loss, McMurry produced 11 hits. Senior Jessika Truax had a three-hit day, while sophomore Grace Duecker brought home two runs in the sixth inning with an RBI single up the middle. Otis, Angelica Abila and Kasey Woolard also had two-hit days.
