AUSTIN, Texas – McMurry Women's Basketball almost pulled off a remarkable fourth quarter comeback at Concordia Texas on Thursday, but the Tornados withstood the surge and iced the game for a 72-61 win in American Southwest Conference action.
Trailing 52-36 after three quarters, McMurry (0-16, 0-11 ASC) rose from the ashes of a double-digit deficit with its best quarter of the night.
The War Hawks went on a 9-0 run early in the fourth, capped by a three-pointer from Kristin Salas. Later, down 56-45, McMurry pulled within two possessions with a quick 6-0 run, forcing Concordia (7-11, 5-8 ASC) to call a timeout.
Sidney McHenry then made a layup with 1:42 to go to make it 62-59 – a three-point game – but from there, the Tornados answered with a three-pointer from Havyn Perez. This led to a miss on McMurry's next possession and allowed Concordia to pull away with free throws.
Ten different players scored for the War Hawks, led by Azallee Johnson with 12 points and McHenry with 11 points. McMurry had 43 of its points off the bench. Johnson joined Destiny Mathews and Valery Alvarado for the team lead with six rebounds.
