ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University Women's Tennis team closed out its season with a tough loss in the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Women's Tennis Championship, dropping to UT Dallas by a 5-0 decision on Friday.
The War Hawks were unable to claim a doubles point against the Comets and lost time in singles as UTD would quickly put away the game with two wins before McMurry was able to extend the match.
"The girls fought hard today," said head coach
Chris Breaux. "It wasn't the outcome we wanted, but we had a fun journey."
The Comets earned a clean sweep at doubles after blanking No. 1 doubles duo
Claire Hillyer and
Hope Turner, 8-0, to earn the first point on the day.
Freshman pair
Jasmin Klassen and
Hannah DeFriend would put up a fight at No. 2 doubles but would fall short against Saumya Vedula and Rebecca Jackson, 8-5.
To conclude doubles play, No. 3 doubles would fall in favor of UTD as
Gabrielle Ellwanger and
Morgan Parnell would fall by a score of 8-2 to Stephanie Joseph and Svaksha Iyengar.
The War Hawks had a tough task ahead of them entering singles play. Up 3-0, the Comets only needed two more points to seal the win.
Unfortunately, McMurry was unable to claim a point before UTD would close the match with wins at No. 4 and No. 1 singles respectively.
UTD's Suzuka Nishino defeated DeFriend at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-1, while Kathy Joseph completed No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, over Hillyer to earn the win for the Comets.
