Late inning plagues War Hawks in loss to Blazers

ABILENE, Texas -- The McMurry University Softball team fell to Belhaven, 12-4, after a sixth inning rally detered a War Hawk comeback at Edwards Field on Saturday.

Senior Emily Michki went 2-3 in the box while junior Kayla Otis recorded two RBI's and a double in the matchup. Junior Camille Scott added a double to earn an RBI as well.

Freshman Mercedes Camacho had a productive outing, drawing two walks and crossing the plate twice for McMurry (3-3, 3-3 ASC).

The War Hawks got off to a hot start with an early second inning double by junior Kayla Otis to score Camacho and Michki.

Early fielding errors by the Blazers defense would put McMurry in an early scoring position at the bottom of the third. Brianna Martinez would reach home on a fielding error by second base before the Blazers were able to pull out of the inning without any more damage.

Down 3-0, Belhaven led the fourth inning off with a walk by Allie Gordon followed by a Kennedy Carruth single to the left-side. With two on base, shortstop Cade Bass knocked one across the fence to even up the score.

In the bottom of the fourth, McMurry quickly jumped back out front with a double to right-center by Scott to score Camacho once more.

A leadoff homer by Blazers' Marlee Blackwell in the fifth would ignite the Blazers, igniting another scoring run to jump out to a 6-4 lead heading into the sixth.

A string of hits would find Belhaven on top with a 12-4 lead in the sixth before the War Hawks would make their way back on offense.

With some ground to make up, Camacho would lead the inning off with a walk but was left on base as three straight outs would close the game in six innings for the War Hawks.

McMurry will have a few days to recoup as they will host the Abilene Spring Break Tournament beginning Wednesday, March 10. Up first for the War Hawks is the University of Saint Thomas (TX) at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
