Truax’s grand slam leads War Hawks past Centenary, 5-1

ABILENE, Texas – Junior transfer Jessika Truax broke up a scoreless game with a fifth inning grand slam for McMurry University, as the War Hawks softball team toppled Centenary 5-1 in the Abilene Spring Break Tournament on Thursday at Edwards Field.

The party started with a pair of one out singles by freshman Angelica Abila and junior Camille Scott. Two batters later, senior Mickhayla Nunez worked a two-out walk to load the bases. This brought up Truax, who coming into today only had three at-bats.

Ahead in a 3-1 count, Truax crushed a deep drive to left center for the go-ahead grand slam. The hit was her first home run for the War Hawks.

This allowed Camille Scott, one of the runs that scored following her single, to pitch with a lead and earn the complete game win through 7.0 innings. She allowed one run on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The lone run came in the final inning.

McMurry added another run in the sixth inning to go up 5-0, as Abila grounded one deep in the hole to score Jessie Ramirez from third.

Centenary scored their run in the final inning on an RBI single by Jaymee Wilkinson. With Wilkinson later advancing to third, McMurry's senior centerfielder Ashley McClellan made an acrobatic play over her head to end hopes of a rally and the game.

Abila and junior designated player Kasey Woolard each had two-hit days for McMurry.
