PINEVILLE, La. – McMurry University did not grab its first lead until the second half on Thursday night, but a late second half drought allowed American Southwest Conference foe Louisiana College to win 77-66 in Pineville, La.
Trailing the entire first half, McMurry (2-10, 2-7) entered the locker rooms behind 39-29. This deficit was swiftly erased as the War Hawks opened the second half on an 11-0 run to regain the lead. The run was sparked by back-to-back three pointers from Matt Pena and a go-ahead triple by Jordan Sherman with 16:02 remaining.
After some back-and-forth, McMurry found itself ahead 56-50 with under 10:00 to go. From there, Louisiana College (5-3, 5-3) went back on top with a long 14-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to make it 64-56 in favor of the home team.
The War Hawks went scoreless for over four minutes, but snapped the drought to remain in striking distance down two possessions. LC would eventually ice the game in the closing moments, avoiding the scare and remaining above .500.
McMurry had five scorers in double-digits, led by junior Jordan Sherman with 14 points on 6-12 shooting. Sherman also had seven rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal – the steal that set up his go-ahead three-point basket for McMurry's first lead of the night.
