ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University Men's Basketball fell victim to a remarkable shooting performance by Sul Ross State on Saturday, as nine first half three-pointers pushed the Lobos past the War Hawks in Alpine, 73-57.
McMurry (1-7, 1-3) scored the first four points of the contest and forced an early timeout in the first two minutes, but Sul Ross (5-5, 2-2) found its footing soon after with a 12-0 run to steal momentum. The scoring continued for the home-standing Lobos, as they finished 9-19 from behind the arc in the first frame.
The War Hawks were unable to match the offensive firepower, shooting 8-28 for the first half and 1-9 from behind the arc. With a faster-paced offense in the deficit, McMurry went on to finish 21-64 from the field with six three-point buckets.
Freshman forward Michael Imariagbe finished with a double-double, scoring a team-high 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Fellow freshman Matt Pena was the primary outside scorer, shooting 4-9 from downtown to finish with 12 points.
McMurry now returns home for the first time this calendar year, as it faces Concordia Texas on Thursday, Jan. 21 in Kimbrell Arena. Tip-off from Abilene is set for 7:30 p.m.
McMurry University Athletics plans to open the venue at limited capacity with COVID-19 protocols in effect. An announcement with these protocols will be made prior to game day on mcmurrysports.com and on various McMurry Athletics social media platforms.
