MEMPHIS, Tenn. – McMurry University Men's Basketball picked up its third consecutive win Saturday evening, downing Rhodes College, 74-64, in its opening game of the Rhodes Christmas Classic.
Senior guard Dedrick Berry Jr. led the charge offensively, finishing with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Three others finished with double figures in scoring, as well.
The War Hawks (4-5) used a 23-6 run spanning the final five minutes of the first half and the first five of the second half, as McMurry erased a seven-point deficit and turned it into a 44-34 lead. The run was capped by a Berry triple.
Another triple by Berry pushed the lead to 11, and McM led by as many as 12 at 54-42 after a jumper by sophomore guard Jordan Sherman. The Lynx (3-7) pulled within three points with just under seven minutes left, but that was as close as Rhodes would get.
Senior forward Krishawn Terry finished a layup with 1:22 left to extend the lead back to double digits, before McM closed out the game with four free throws. Terry recorded his first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points to go with 14 rebounds.
The first half went back and forth, as the lead changed nine times and was tied seven times. McMurry took the lead for good at 31-30 with just over a minute remaining in the first half on a jumper by junior guard Colin Taylor.
Taylor joined Berry and Terry in double figures with 10 points, while senior guard Zacc Carter completed the quartet of double-digit scorers with 12 points. Taylor, Berry and Carter combined for 10 of the team's 12 assists, with Taylor having a team high four.
Senior forward Mike Williams Jr. finished with seven points and nine boards.
McMurry held a 44-38 advantage on the glass, which led to eight second chance points compared to just two for Rhodes.
The War Hawks conclude the Rhodes Christmas Classic Sunday at 3 p.m. with a neutral site matchup against Berry College.
