War Hawks' rally comes up short at TLU

SEGUIN, Texas – McMurry University Men's Basketball nearly erased a 10-point deficit in the final two minutes Friday evening at Texas Lutheran University, but couldn't quite pull off the comeback, dropping a 75-69 decision.

The War Hawks (0-4) got within 71-69 with 15 seconds left on a pair of free throws by freshman guard Brad Milliorn after trailing 68-58 with 1:44 remaining. However, the Bulldogs secured the win with four free throws in the final seconds.

Each team scored 42 points in the second half, as many statistical categories were nearly even in the stanza.

McMurry led 19-15 at the under eight media timeout, as seven different players recorded a basket in the early going. McM led until the final minute of the half, when TLU closed on a 7-0 run to take a 33-27 lead into the break.

TLU led the rest of the way, with McMurry only narrowing the deficit in the waning moments.

Junior guard Colin Taylor paced the McM offense with 19 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Junior guard Khalil Butler added 14 points, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Senior guard Zacc Carter scored 13 points to give McMurry three in double figures.

Butler grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, with senior forward Mike Williams Jr. coming down with six boards. Four players had four rebounds.

Also on the defensive end, Butler picked up three steals while sophomore guard Jordan Sherman swatted away four shots.

McMurry outshot TLU 41.1 percent to 39.3 percent.

The War Hawks will have another opportunity for their first win Saturday at 4 p.m. when they visit Schreiner University.
