Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

War Hawks blank Eagles to start new streak

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Soccer got back to its winning ways Saturday afternoon, defeating University of the Ozarks, 2-0, at Wilford Moore Stadium in American Southwest Conference action.

The War Hawks (10-1-4, 5-1 ASC) posted one of their best defensive efforts of the season, allowing just one shot all game. The one shot was on target, resulting in one save for goalkeeper Cindy Villasana. Keeper Jordan Gregory did not have a shot attempted against her in the second half thanks to the strong McM back line.

McMurry was relentless in attacking the net, racking up 20 shots, including eight on target. The War Hawks got all the offense they needed in the ninth minute of the game, as they converted one of their seven shots in the first half.

Sophomore midfielder Meriah Sikora lofted the ball to the top of the 18-yard box, where freshman forward Ashlyn Heger battled through two defenders for the ball. Once she had it, Heger booted it in with her left foot for her second goal of the season.

McMurry padded its lead in the second half in the 58th minute. One of 11 corner kick opportunities for the War Hawks, senior defender Karleigh Alsip headed in a perfect cross from junior defender Emily Fisher for a 2-0 lead.

In addition to outshooting the Eagles (5-5-3, 2-4 ASC) 20-1 and 8-1 in shots on goal, the War Hawks controlled the possession 59 percent of the time. McM had 11 corners to just two for the Eagles and had 13 shots in the second half.

Freshman forward Alyssa Daily led McMurry with four shots, along with five other players taking at least two shots.

The War Hawks return to the road next week, with a visit to Sul Ross State Thursday at 2 p.m.
