ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University women's basketball closed out the 2017-18 regular season at crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons University, dropping a 51-50 decision at the Mabee Complex. The loss still left the War Hawks with a 13-11 record overall (11-6 in the ASC), while the Cowgirls upped their record to 6-19 (4-13 in the ASC).
McMurry will now wait to learn its opponent for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Region Tournament in March.
McM and HSU stayed close to each other the entire game. The War Hawks' largest lead was seven points and the Cowgirls five points. Neither team scored any points in the final 1:14 minutes of the game and the War Hawks had two shot attempts for the victory in the final three seconds of the game, but could not convert.
Senior
Sham Hunter, playing her final game in front of her hometown fans, led the War Hawks in both scoring and rebounds. Hunter had a double-double of 14 points and 14 boards. She hit 7-fo-13 from the field, also dishing off four assists and making three steals.
Sophomore
Skyler Reyna had 13 points and eight rebounds, as well as a pair of blocked shots. Reyna drained 5-of-9 shot attempts. Sophomore guard
Isabel Carrion had 10 points as the team's third double-digit scorer.
Carrion and
Monica Jones each hauled in four rebounds, as well.
McMurry led by a single point (16-15) after one quarter. But the teams went to the halftime locker room tied 27-27.
