SEGUIN, Texas – A late-game run by the McMurry University women's basketball team fell short in a 71-61 non-conference loss at Texas Lutheran University. The War Hawks (0-3) trailed by 25 points with 6:20 left to play, before outscoring the Bulldogs (3-1) by a 22-7 margin the remainder of the game.
The host TLU team built its advantage by outscoring McM 17-13 in the first quarter and by seven points in each the second and third stanzas. The War Hawks trailed 35-24 at the intermission and 55-35 through three periods, before mounting their fourth quarter run.
Freshman
Savannah Johnson led all scorers with 16 points, hitting 8-for-12 from the field. Johnson also had five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Junior
Skyler Reyna posted her first double-double of the season. Reyna tallied 13 points and had a monster game on the glass, with 17 caroms. She was 7-for-8 from the free throw line, also registering two assists and a steal.
In all, McM was out-rebounded by the Bulldogs, 36-33, for the game.
Junior guard
Sarah Doherty made her first appearance of the 2018-19 season, after battling an ankle injury, and responded with nine points, hitting 3-of-5 field goals and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Doherty dished off four assists, as well.
Sophomore Jaymi Gordon-Dean chipped in eight points.
Isabel Carrion and
Brittany Rodgers each booked six points, with three from
Dominique Machuca to round out McMurry's offense. Machuca had a team-best five assists and Rodgers had the War Hawks' lone blocked shot.
McMurry will next travel to Spokane, Washington on Saturday and Sunday for games versus Whitman College and Whitworth University, respectively.
