Women's Hoops Streak Snapped at Five by UTD, 73-58

RICHARDSON, Texas – McMurry University women's basketball had its five-game win streak come to an end by suffering a 73-58 loss to the University of Texas-Dallas at the UTD Activity Center.  The setback was also the first this season in the American Southwest Conference for the War Hawks (6-4, 4-1 ASC).

McM got off to a fast start against the Comets (7-2, 4-1 ASC). McMurry led 6-0 on a trey by Monica Jones and a three-point play by Sham Hunter.  An Isabel Carrion jumper at the 6:21 mark of the opening quarter made it 8-2.

But UTD closed the period on a 17-2 run to lead after one quarter, 19-10. The War Hawks tallied to first bucket of the second quarter, only to have the Comets answer with seven unanswered points to lead by 14.  UT-Dallas carried a 38-22 lead into the halftime locker room.

The host UTD squad led by as much as 22 points – 59-37 - with 7:53 left in the fourth quarter. However, the War Hawks made a final run at the Comets. A Skyler Reyna layup with 2:09 left to play got McM to within 12 points, 66-54. But McMurry was unable to slice further into the deficit down the stretch.

Reyna led all scorers in the game with a 19-point effort. Reyna connected on 6-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. She also had seven rebounds.

Jones added 16 points, buoyed by a pair to three-point baskets and a 6-for-6 night at the charity stripe. Jones also hauled in five boards.

Hunter registered her fourth double-double of the season. Hunter had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to UTD. Hunter had a game-best three steals, as well as a pair of assists.

Carrion had seven points for McM.  Britney Beaver had three pints, Shabaria Walter two and Sarah Doherty one to round out the War Hawks' scoring.

As a team, UTD held a narrow 37-36 edge in rebounds. The Comets dominated in the paint, out-scoring the War Hawks by a 44-24 margin. McM found itself out-shot from the field, 52 percent to 33 percent.
