JACKSON, Miss. – For the second time in as many American Southwest Conference games, McMurry University men's basketball senior
LaRandall Scroggins rolled up a double-double, resulting in a 91-87 road win. The War Hawks leveled their season record at 2-2 and improved to 2-0 in the ASC.
Scroggins had game-high totals of 23 points and 12 rebounds, keying McM's second-half surge. Scroggins was 8-of-13 from the floor and made good on 7-of-10 free throws. He also had three assists and a blocked shot in his 36 minutes of time on the court.
Despite Scroggins' numbers, the War Hawks were not able to fully dispatch of BU until the waning seconds of the game. The teams were knotted in a 40-40 game at the intermission. With just 30 seconds left to play, the teams were tied for the 11th time, 85-85.
Shakur Smith drained a three-ball to put McM on top for good, 88-85, with 26 tics left on the clock. That was followed by a pair of free throws from
Dedrick Berry Jr. and one charity toss from
Colin Taylor down the stretch.
The War Hawks dominated in the paint, out-scoring Belhaven 42-20 inside. McM out-rebounded the Blazers by a 40-25 margin.
Joining Scroggins in double-figure scoring was
Luke Stephenson and Smith. Stephenson finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals. Smith added 10 points – going 4-for-4 from the floor – and had a team-leading five assists, along with four rebounds.
Taylor booked nine points and
Zacc Carter eight.
The War Hawks had a deft shooting effort, hitting 31-of-58 from the floor, better than 53 percent for the game. McM also converted 25-of-42 free throw chances. McMurry's defense forced BU into 16 turnovers, as well.
