Box Score PINEVILLE, La. – Sophomore
Cristen Lumbreras scored in the 59th minute and the McMurry University women's soccer team made it stand up in a 1-0 victory at Louisiana College. The win by the War Hawks (1-6, 1-2 ASC) over the Wildcats (0-6-2, 0-3 ASC) gave the team its first win of 2016.
Lumbreras' match winner came 58:39 minutes into the match. Lumbreras settled a ball that took a high bounce over the defender and carried it 35 yards, blasting it past LC goalkeeper McKenna Raines for the 1-0 lead.
With its first win of the season hanging in the balance, it was then up for the War Hawks' defense to preserve matters. And the unit responded. Led by
Mason Malone,
Karleigh Alsip,
Bethany Cryer and
Tierany Fomby-Bell, McM allowed the Wildcats just eight total shots – four in each half – but none on goal. So strong was the War Hawks back line, McMurry net-minder
Jordan Gregory did not have to make a save in her 90-minutes of work.
The win was also the first collegiate shutout for Gregory, a graduate of Cooper High School.
Lumbreras was a one-woman wrecking crew on Louisiana College. The diminutive forward had seven of the War Hawks' 14 shots as a team, putting two on goal.
Marissa Figueroa,
Hannah Way, Cryer and
Julissa Alvarez all put shots on goal against LC's Raines. McMurry took eight shots in the first half and six in the second.
McM had three corner kicks, as well, all in the second half.
The War Hawks will travel to Belhaven University on Saturday to complete the two-game road trip.
