ABILENE, Texas – Senior
Connor Robinson had another monster game for McMurry University's men's basketball team, as it scored a 76-69 home win over Rust College (Miss.) at Kimbrell Arena.
The win improved the War Hawks record to 4-7 overall, while the Bearcats fell to 4-11 on the year.
Robinson notched his eighth double-digit scoring game of the season and breached the 30-point mark for the third time. Robinson was a sterling 14-for-20 from the floor and an equally efficient 9-of-13 from the free throw stripe. He also had five rebounds and four steals.
Teammate
Alex Lewis hit 8-of-14 field goals, and passed off for four assists, on his way to a 19-point night for McM. Lewis also pulled down four boards.
Hondo Webb, also a senior, did a little bit of everything for McM head coach
Clif Carroll's team in the win over the Bearcats. Webb had nine points, eight rebounds, a game-high eight assists and a block in his 32 minutes on the floor.
Although the War Hawks led wire-to-wire, the hosts needed to hang on in the waning minutes in picking up win No. 4 this season. McM tallied the first four points of the game and built a 17-point first-half lead on a Robinson layup with 1:49 left in the period.
McMurry would eventually carry a 12 point – 40-28 – advantage in to the halftime locker room.
In the early going of the second half, McM held its double-figure cushion and earned its largest lead of the game – 62-42 - with 9:52 left to play, on a dunk by Lewis (after a nifty alley-oop pass from
Thierry Tchenko).
But just when it looked like the War Hawks were on their way to a decisive win, Rust began to eat away at what had been a sterling effort by McMurry. Over the next eight minutes, the Bearcats would out-score McM, 24-7, to draw to within three points (69-66) with just 1:10 left in the contest.
But almost as if on cue when his team needed a lift the most, Robinson gave McM some breathing room. A layup and – and after an RC foul - a free throw to complete the three-point play, put the War Hawks up 71-66 with under a minute to play.
