War Hawks Can't Tame Lions

COMMERCE, Texas – Visiting McMurry University could not counteract a fast start by Texas A&M University-Commerce in a road loss, 78-49, at the TAMUC Field House.  The War Hawks fell to 6-9 on the year, while the Lions – who received votes in last week's NCAA II national poll – improved to 13-3.

Commerce roared out to a 12-0 lead within the first five minutes of the game. McM registered its first field goal at the 14:57 mark of the opening period on a layup by Gabriel Chacon. TAMUC kept its foot on the accelerator, leading by as much as 21 points with 2:46 left in the first half, 36-15.

The Lions would eventually take a 41-25 lead into the locker room.

McM was behind by 19 points, when Hondo Webb and Blake Cochran hit back-to-back treys that cut the margin to just 13 points – 46-33 – with 15:21 left in regulation.  But a 26-4 run by Commerce over the next 10 minutes increased the gap to 35 points, 72-37.

The Lions shot 50 percent from the field for the game (31-62), while McM hit 35 percent (19-54). TAMUC also held a rebounds advantage, 37-31. The Lions parlayed McMurry's 20 turnovers into 25 points.

Freshman Aaron Gettys led all scorers with 16 points, 14 of which came in the first half alone. In the game, Gettys was 5-of-10 from the field, 4-of-7 of which were beyond the arc. He also had two points and two steals.

Connor Robinson registered his sixth double-double game of the season. Robinson had 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He hit 6-of-15 from the floor and passed off for three assists.

Hondo Webb had seven points, four rebounds and three assists. Cochran and Austin Denmon had five points each. LaRandall Scroggins had seven rebounds.
