War Hawks Settle for Split in Denver

DENVER, Colo. – McMurry University men's basketball had its two-game win streak snapped, falling to the University of Jamestown (N.D.), 84-68, in the Johnson and Wales Classic at the Wildcat Center. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 5-8 on the year, while the Jimmies – who received votes in last week's NAIA poll - improved to 12-5.

McMurry lead in the early going, 6-4, but Jamestown went on a 16-1 run over a nine-minute span to create a chasm which McM would never overcome. The Jimmies took a 19-point lead – 41-22 – into the locker room at the half.

Only three players – Blake Cochran, Connor Robinson and Alex Lewis – were able to score for McMurry in the opening segment. Cochran led all scorers with 11 points at the intermission, while Robinson added nine points and Lewis two.

In the second half, McM was unable to make much headway. The War Hawks got to within 13 points (72-59) in the final segment, after a Thierry Tchenko 18-footer with 2:32 left, but could get no closer. Conversely, UJ led by as much as 24 points, 65-41, midway through the period.

Robinson led all scorers with 24 points, his sixth-consecutive game with 20-plus points scored. Robinson was 9-of-17 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Robinson also had a game-high – as well as career-best – seven assists in his 35 minutes of court time. He also pulled down four rebounds.

Cochran was an efficient 5-of-6 from the field – 2-of-3 from beyond the arc – on his way to a 15-point game. Gabriel Chacon and Tchenko tallied nine and eight points, respectively. Austin Denmon had six points in six minutes of action.

Lewis and Aaron Gettys each grabbed five rebounds to pace McMurry on the glass.

While the loss snapped McMurry's win skein, it was the fourth-straight win for the Jimmies.

The War Hawks will next be in action at home on Tuesday (Jan. 13) versus Rhema Bible College. Tip-off at Kimbrell Arena is set for 7 p.m.
