ABILENE, Texas - The McMurry University men's basketball team will look to finish the first half of their Heartland Conference schedule with a victory as it will play host to the University of Texas – Permian Basin on Saturday.
The War Hawks are coming off an 83-57 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State University. In that contest, McMurry did not trail once as they were led by a 27-point night from
Takoby Jackson.
DJ Stennis and
Alfred Perez also scored in double figures. Stennis finished with 11 points and Perez scored 10.
So far this season, the War Hawks are 6-0 in the friendly confines of Kimbrell Arena. Through six games at home, McMurry is outscoring its opponents by an average of 79.0 - 60.2 per game. The War Hawks also control the glass well, out-rebounding opponents 38.5 - 29.2 per game at home.
Offensively, McMurry is being led by Jackson, who is averaging 13.1 points per game Anotnio Bell is also averaging double-figures this year, scoring 11.7 points per contest. Perez is scoring 8.5 per game and Stennis and
Connor Robinson are scoring over six points per contest.
As a team, the War Hawks continue to hang their hats on the defensive side of the ball. McM ranks first in the Heartland Conference in opponents' points per game (63.8) and second in three-point percentage defense (.308). They also rank third in the conference in opponents field goal percentage (.410).
On the other side of the ball, the Falcons are coming into the game with a 7-8 record. UTPB has won two straight games, including a 74-64 upset win over #14 Newman on Jan. 19. Three Falcons are averaging double figures on the year, led by Xavier Martin's 11 points per game. Rob Heyer is scoring 10.9 per contest, and Madison Turner is averaging 10.1 per game.
