McMurry women drop heartbreaker in overtime to open season, 2-1

BOERNE, Texas – McMurry University struck first, but the War Hawk women's soccer team eventually fell to Houston-Victoria in overtime 2-1 to open the 2011 season at the Boerne Soccer Complex Tuesday.

Rachel Moore scored in the 19th minute unassisted for the War Hawks as McMurry took the lead. However, Moore's shot, was just one of five total for the contest for McMurry and only three landed on goal.

The Jaguars fired 28 shots with 17 on goal, and UHV landed two in the net in the 84th and 94th minute to take the victory. Laura Caldwell took a pass from Jordan Simpson to knot the score in minute 84 before regulation ended with a 1-1 tie.

Then, just 3:26 into the overtime period, Danya Galang hit the game winner to seal the victory and the Jaguars move to 3-1 on the season.

McMurry's Hillari Chambers recorded 10 saves in the second half and surrendered both goals while Makenzie Hargrove pitched a shutout for the War Hawks in the first half facing five shots and saving all of them.

The Jaguars' Maria Pina saved two shots and allowed Moore's sixth-career goal in the first half before Tabitah Segovia didn't face a shot from the goalie position in the second half.

McMurry returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday at Edwards Field and faces Central Christian College for the team's home opener.
