MARSHALL – East Texas Baptist scored the fist three goals and held on to defeat McMurry's men 3-1 in the American Southwest Conference opener Friday afternoon. Chris Dier, Richard Andrews and Grey Acuna all scored goals for the Tigers and McMurry's
Tyler Tarango scored in the 84th minute on a penalty kick for the visitors' only goal.
ETBU out-shot McMurry 22-14 on the match and Zane Barnes held McMurry to just one goal while saving seven shots. ETBU got on the board in the first half with a goal from Dier on an assist from Justin Bailey in the 30th minute of the contest.
With the score 1-0 at halftime, the Tigers opened the half with two quick goals coming just five minutes apart. Andrews scored on an assist from Carlos German in the 52nd minute and Acuna's goal came in the 57th minute on an assist from Stuart Renfro.
Tarango's goal came on a penalty kick with 6:21 left in regulation to cut the Tiger lead to two goals. For Tarango, the freshman from Pearland, it was his first goal of the season.
Matt Mouer saved nine shots in the losing effort for McMurry.
ETBU moved to 1-2-1 overall on the season while McMurry fell to 2-3 overall. The men's team will try to rebound Saturday in a match against LeTourneau in Longview.
