BROWNWOOD – Howard Payne made quick work of McMurry winning in a sweep with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 decision at Brownwood Coliseum Tuesday night in American Southwest Conference West Division action.
Terah Brown led McMurry with eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage with just two errors on 15 attacks.
M.J. Vickers had five kills, no errors and a .333 hitting mark. Defensively,
Sarah Anding led with eight digs.
Unforced errors played a part in HPU's defeat of McMurry. The visitors had six ball-handling errors, three serve receive errors and five service errors on the night. All in all, McMurry lost 14 points in unforced errors and lost the match by a combined total of 11 points.
For Howard Payne, it was the Lady Jackets' first win over McMurry since head coach Ken Carver took over in 2006.
In the first set, McMurry trailed 20-13 before head coach
Cammie Petree called a timeout to regroup the team. McMurry responded with an 8-1 run to knot the score at 21. However, the Lady Jackets nixed the comeback and took set one 25-22.
In the second set, McMurry relinquished an early 9-4 lead. HPU scored seven-straight points to take an 11-9 lead. From there, the Lady Jackets outscored McMurry 14-12 to take the second set 25-21.
In the final set, McMurry trailed 7-3 early but rallied to take an 8-7 lead. However, HPU kept a good thing going from the first two sets and rebounded to build a 23-17 lead. Despite scoring four out of the next six points, McMurry couldn't rally and HPU completed the three-set sweep.
The last time Howard Payne defeated McMurry came Oct. 17, 2006 in Abilene at Kimbrell Arena. The win snaps a four-match losing skid against McMurry for the Lady Jackets.
The Lady Jackets improved to 1-1 on the season and 3-7 overall while McMurry dropped its ASC West opener and fell to 3-5 overall.
