DALLAS - Lloyd Dowland scored his first goal of the season, but Hendrix College defeated McMurry's men's soccer team 3-1 Saturday afternoon in Irving. The two teams met neutrally on the campus of the University of Dallas during a torrential downpour of rain, but Hendrix was able to escape with the victory.

Dowland's goal came in the 20th minute of the contest to knot the score at one. He scored on a corner kick from Logan Garza who recorded his second assist in as many days.

However, in the second half, Hendrix's Jonathan Birdwell and Thomas Robins scored goals in the 65th and 78th minute respectively to give Hendrix the win. McMurry goalie Matt Mouer saved three shots on the day while Hendrix's Adam Legg had four saves.

McMurry took 14 shots with five coming on goal while Hendrix took 15 and had seven on goal.

McMurry head coach Tim Grove said the weather played a strong part in the match.

“I'm surprised we played in these conditions, it really hurt our style of play as we are a possession team,” he said. “It was a good lesson for us in learning we need to be more versatile. I am very proud of the way the kids played this weekend and, I think we will be successful in conference.”

McMurry fell to 2-2 but was coming off an upset of the University of Dallas Friday. McMurry's 3-2 win over UD was the first defeat the Crusaders suffered on its home field since 2004.

McMurry returns to action Friday in Marshall against East Texas Baptist to open up the American Southwest Conference schedule. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
