IRVING – The University of Dallas used two late goals to defeat McMurry University's women 3-1 Friday afternoon. McMurry's
Gracie Rodriguez tied the score with a goal in the 55th minute, however, the Lady Crusaders responded with goals in the 71st and 77th minutes to break the tie and seal the game respectively.
UD out-shot McMurry 19-4, however, McMurry made its shots count. Rodriguez scored in the 55th minute early in the second half on an assist from
Amber Torres to lock the score at one. McMurry's goalie,
Bianca Van Osdol held off the Lady Crusaders as long as she could before Mary Ruth Alzheimer's goal in the 72nd minute broke the 1-1 tie.
Then, just 6:21 later, the Lady Crusaders' Emma Dugan ensured UD's victory with an insurance goal on a set up from teammate Inez Garza.
For Rodriguez, it was the Abilene native's first goal since Oct. 28, 2006 when she scored in a 3-2 victory over Howard Payne in Abilene. Torres's assist involves her in both McMurry goals so far this season; she scored the first goal of the season for McMurry in a 2-1 loss to Wayland Baptist Sept. 3.
Van Osdol recorded nine saves for McMurry in the losing effort. UD scored its first goal in the 16th minute when Hanna Langsfield knocked one in on an assist from Marie Meagher. The Lady Crusaders' Jennifer Boryca had three saves in the win for UD.
McMurry's women fell to 0-3 and won't return to action until Sept. 18 against East Texas Baptist, which begins American Southwest Conference competition.
