ABILENE – Texas Dallas busted a two-all tie with a four-run top of the seventh, which propelled the Comets to a 7-4 victory over McMurry in an American Southwest Conference crossover game Tuesday afternoon at Walt Driggers Field.
The loss drops McMurry to 22-14. McMurry has also now lost two straight games after going on a school-record 12-game winning streak to get back in the ASC West race. McMurry can still claim the all-important second seed in the ASC West if they can sweep Sul Ross State in the upcoming three-game set between the schools on Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, UTD improves to 21-15.
McMurry's
Jeff Jackson broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth as he belted a solo homer over the right field fence. The Comets struck back, though, with a two-run top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. McMurry would even the score in the bottom of the sixth when Jackson hit an RBI fielder's choice to the UTD third baseman, which scored
Stephen Derrick from third.
But the Comets would tag four runs on the board in the seventh, including solo home runs by Brad Price and Jared Smith, to take a 6-2 lead. McMurry got one of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh as
Tre Lips doubled to left center to plate
Nathan Love and make it a 6-3 game.
The three-run deficit proved to be as close as McMurry would get the rest of the way as the Comets scored one run in the top of the eighth before McMurry's
Weston Franco hit a mammoth solo home run over the left-field netting to finish out the scoring. McMurry used eight pitchers in the game with
Colton Smith taking the loss.
