ABILENE – The McMurry men's tennis team already clinched the program's first American Southwest Conference West Division title on Tuesday with their win over Hardin-Simmons, but McMurry still had a regular-season goal of finishing perfect in ASC West play and they did just that with a 9-0 victory over Schreiner Friday afternoon at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The win improves the McMurry men to 14-5 overall and 6-0 in ASC West play. Both the McMurry men's and women's tennis teams will finish out regular-season play with a non-conference match against Luther College at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
McMurry completely dominated the match as Schreiner only took eight total games. In doubles play,
Bryan Rainwater and
Will Davis won at No. 1, 8-1;
Brad Armour and
Brent Abilez won at No. 2, 8-0; and
Daniel Olivares and
Jordan Nokes won at No. 3, 8-1.
The dominate play by McMurry continued in singles competition as
Chris Bumann won at No, 1, 6-1, 6-0; Rainwater won at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0; Olivares won at No 3, 6-0, 6-0;
Tony Williams won at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2;
Jordan Nokes won at No 5, 6-1, 6-1; and
Andy Bonau won at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.
On the women's side,
Janet Hernandez won the clinching point at No. 6 singles in McMurry's 5-4 victory over Schreiner. Other singles winners for McMurry were
Gavee Olsen at No. 2 and
Shelby Carpenter at No. 5. McMurry also took two of three doubles points as Olsen and
Hilary Stone won at No. 2 and Hernandez and Caitlin Quinell won at No. 3.
