McMurry tops Ozarks, 9-7

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – Jordan Brown hit a three-run homer in the top of fifth to give McMurry a lead that they would never relinquish as McMurry knocked off the University of the Ozarks, 9-7, in American Southwest Conference crossover action Friday afternoon at Lonie Qualls Field.

McMurry went into the fifth inning trailing 6-4 before Brown nailed a two-out three-run home run over the left field fence to give McMurry a 7-6 lead.  McMurry would tack on one run in the top of the sixth to make it an 8-6 ballgame, but the Eagles responded in the bottom half of the sixth inning with of run of their own to make it an 8-7 game.  That score remained true until McMurry's Nathan Love crushed a solo home run over the left field fence in the ninth inning, which proved to be the last run of the game. 

The win is McMurry's third in a row as they improve to an even .500 on the year at 3-3.  Meanwhile, the loss drops the Eagles to 3-4.  The teams will finish their three-game set on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon. 

There was lots of fireworks in the early going as McMurry scored four runs in the top of the first and the Ozarks responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.  McMurry continued to lead 4-3 until the bottom of the fourth when the Eagles tagged three more runs on the board to take a 6-4 lead.  The Ozarks continued to lead by that margin until Brown's homer. 

McMurry out hit the Eagles 12-7, but committed four errors on the day compared to just one for the Ozarks.  Cody Curry started for McMurry and got a no decision as he went 3.2 innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits.  Adrian Gaona relieved Curry and got the win as he went four innings and only surrendered one run on one hit.  Cory Davis got his second save on the year as he pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
