For the second time in three weeks, McMurry's sophomore quarterback
Jake Mullin was named the American Southwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Mullin helped McMurry to its first three-game win streak since the 2000 season tossing four touchdown passes and throwing for 377 yards in a 35-28 win over Sul Ross State in Abilene Saturday.
Mullin threw two touchdown passes to
R.J. Long, one to
Delfonte Diamond and one to
Marcus Franklin in the Homecoming win over the Lobos. He also completed 32 of his 44 passes.
In McMurry's three-game win streak, Mullin has completed 73 percent of his passes for 1,120 yards, 12 touchdowns and just one interception. He surpassed the 2,000-yard mark for the season and through Saturday's win, he has 2,298 yards passing and 19 touchdowns, which both numbers lead the ASC.
In just seven games, Mullin already ranks 10th on McMurry's career list for passing yards after he passed Ty Sellers (2,116) in Saturday's game. Mullin is on pace to throw for 3,285 yards this season, which would pass the school's single season record of 2,492 yards set by Braxton Shaver in 1998. He lacks just 194 yards to tie that mark and at a pace of 328.5 yards per game passing, Mullin could take the school record against Texas Lutheran Saturday
He needs only three completions to tie Shaver's record for single-season completions. Mullin has 202 and Shaver had 205 in 1997. Mullin is also approaching single-season record for attempts, also held by Shaver. Shaver attempted 374 passes in 1997 and Mullin needs 70 to tie that mark.
Mullin set three individual school records in the Sept. 5 season-opener against Trinity with total offense (490), passing yards (479), and completions (35).
McMurry is 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the ASC and the team stands at third place. McMurry takes to the road to face TLU in Seguin. The Bulldogs have a 0-6 record with a 0-4 mark in league play. Kickoff at Matador Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
