Petree wins 200th as McM sweeps Concordia Texas

Ben Dobson, SID

ROUND ROCK – McMurry coach Cammie Petree recorded her 200th career victory as McMurry swept Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in an American Southwest Conference West Division match at Round Rock High School's gym.

The 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 win pushes McMurry to 9-2 on the year and 3-0 in ASC West play; meanwhile, CTX falls to 4-7 and 0-3.

“I feel incredibly blessed,” Petree said. “I've had the privilege to work with so many wonderful girls along the way and this really makes me think about all of them and how hard they worked. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here.”

While win No. 200 for Petree looked convincing in the box score, it was anything but easy in reality. Much like McMurry's Friday win against Howard Payne, McMurry used rallies late in each set to complete the sweep of the Tornados.

In set one, McMurry held a slight 17-16 lead before finishing the set on an 8-5 run to take the set.

McMurry was sluggish at the start of set two as the Tornados jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead. But McMurry showed resiliency and went on an 8-2 run to square the set at 12. After both teams traded the next few points, McMurry led 20-19 before closing out the set on a 5-1 run.

Set three was tied at 14 before McMurry closed the set – and subsequently the match – on an 11-5 run.

Junior setter Shannon Higgins finished with a double-double for McMurry as she tallied a match-high 26 assists and 11 digs. Higgins also had six kills (on a .456 attack percentage) and two block assists.

McMurry junior outside hitter Danielle Kelton and junior middle blocker Terah Brown tied for the team-high in kills as they finished with eight apiece. Kelton also added nine digs, while Brown finished with seven block assists.

Other top performers for McMurry included sophomore libero Sarah Anding, who finished with a team-high 16 digs; junior setter Kendall Jackson, who finished with nine assists; senior outside hitter Erica English, who finished with six kills and five digs; and sophomore outside hitter Mandie Moore, who finished with six kills, four digs and four block assists.

McMurry returns to action on Friday, Sept. 26, when they travel to Seguin, Texas, to take on preseason ASC West favorite Texas Lutheran. TLU is also currently unbeaten in ASC West play.
