McMurry loses ASC-opener to the Tigers, 3-0

Ben Dobson, SID

ABILENE – A rough eight-minute stretch midway through the second half doomed the McMurry men's soccer team as East Texas Baptist scored all three of its goals during that short period to win an American Southwest Conference match 3-0 Friday afternoon at Edwards Field.

Both teams' defensives held the opposing offensives at bay for most of the match until the 69th minute when the Tigers first got on the board. ETBU's Justin Bailey ended the scoreless drought as he scored from 10 yards out off a pass from Carlos German.

The Tigers struck again seven minutes later (76th minute) as Juan Olua put one in the back of the net from ten yards out off a pass from Richard Andrews to give ETBU a 2-0 advantage. Less than a minute after the Tigers scored their second goal, Andrews tacked on another goal for ETBU off a break.

Excluding the rough eight-minute stretch (69-77) for McMurry, the match was considerably even as ETBU attempted 20 shots to McMurry's 16, with eight of the Tigers' shots being on goal as compared to six for McMurry.

Nathan Perschke attempted five shots for McMurry, with two of those attempts being on goal. Sheharyar Khan and Bobby Westbrook each respectively took three shots for McMurry.

The loss drops McMurry to 0-4 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. McMurry will look to rebound against LeTourneau at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Edwards Field.
