Free throws by Chris Beck and Alex Robles in the final 24 seconds lifted McMurry to a 65-62 victory over Sul Ross State in American Southwest Conference men's basketball here Saturday afternoon.
After Jermaine Packer had given Sul Ross State a lead of 62-61 with 1:01 to play, Beck hit two free throws at 0:24 to put McMurry back on top, 63-62. Then Robles added some insurance points at 0:05 with two free throws for the final three-point cushion.
The win improves McMurry's records to 9-12 overall and 6-11 in league play and leaves Sul Ross State with marks of 8-13 for the season and 8-9 in league play.
Sul Ross State led 35-27 at intermission, but Robles, Beck and Curtis Davis led a McMurry comeback in the second period. Beck led his team with 15 points, and Robles and Davis each added 11 points. Chris Gammage led the winners with five rebounds.
Sul Ross State, shutout from three-point range in the second half after a 4-for-4 performance in the first half, was led by 11 each by Roderick Gunter and Moises Morales. After taking the lead in the first half on 14-of-23 shooting, the visitors hit only 9-of-26 in the second half to aid the McMurry comeback.
McMurry returns to action Thursday when it plays host to Schreiner.
