McMurry kept its narrow American Southwest Conference postseason hopes alive Saturday with a 60-48 win over Texas Lutheran at Kimbrell Arena. After a Howard Payne loss Saturday, McMurry will need to win its final two games and hope that TLU and Schreiner hand HPU losses next week in order for McMurry to take the fourth and final West Division spot for the upcoming ASC Tournament.
Alex Robles scored 17 points and Chris Gammage had 11 points and 12 rebounds in their final games at home. The two seniors were joined by Emile Brown and Curtis Jones on senior day as they completed their careers at home with a win over the Bulldogs.
Brown scored two points and had four rebounds while Jones had five points and five rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Chris Beck had 13 points, seven boards and three steals while Robert Moreno had nine points, four steals and three assists to help aid the victory.
McMurry outscored the Bulldogs 30-16 in the first half and held on for a 12-point victory. The Bulldogs got 14 points from Michael Hill in the losing effort but fell to 2-21 overall on the season and to 2-17 in league play.
McMurry held the Bulldogs to just 38.5 percent shooting for the game. However, McMurry shot just 39.3 percent for the night including an 0-15 effort from beyond the 3-point arc, which is rare because McMurry entered the contest ranked 4th in the ASC in 3-point field goals made.
However, McMurry was able to take advantage of 21 TLU turnovers and also got to the free-throw line 17 times while TLU managed just six trips. The home team converted on 12 free-throw opportunities and the Bulldogs were just 4 of 6.
McMurry is forced to win its final two games on the road against Concordia-Texas Thursday in Austin and then will conclude with the ASC West Champion Mary Hardin-Baylor, who clinched first place Thursday.
The team will also need Howard Payne to lose to Schreiner and Texas Lutheran next week in order to get into the postseason tournament. McMurry improved to 11-12 overall and moved to 8-11 in ASC play.
