Tigers run past McM, 31-7

Ben Dobson, SID

Sophomore wide receiver Simeon Neal caught McMurry's only touchdown in McMurry's 31-7 loss to East Texas Baptist on Saturday. Neal finished the game with a game-high six catches for a game-high 120 receiving yards.
MARSHALL, Texas -- East Texas Baptist's Corey George and Jair Stover each eclipsed the century mark on the ground and combined for three rushing touchdowns Saturday to lead the Tigers to a 31-7 American Southwest Conference win over McMurry at Ornelas Stadium.

George and Stover led a dominating ETBU running attack that ran for 249 yards on the day. George finished with two rushing touchdowns and a game-high 111 yards on just 13 carries, while Stover got in the end zone one time and rushed for 104 yards on 20 carries.

The loss drops McMurry to 0-5 on the year and 0-3 in conference play. McMurry returns home next Saturday to take on Howard Payne in another ASC game. Meanwhile, ETBU improves to 3-1 and 3-0. The win is the Tigers' ninth straight against McMurry (McMurry is the only ASC team to have never beaten ETBU). The Tigers also join No. 3 Mary Hardin-Baylor as the only remaining undefeated teams in ASC play.

Stover scored the game's first points on a three-yard touchdown plunge just three minutes into the game to give the Tigers a quick 7-0 lead. McMurry's defense tightened up after that initial ETBU drive and the score remained 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Tigers added to their lead with just 1:48 remaining until halftime when quarterback Stephen Oehlschlaeger found Kenny Waines for a 19-yard touchdown pass, which gave ETBU a 14-0 lead going into halftime.

McMurry opened the second half with a fumble on its first play, which the Tigers recovered on the McMurry 24 yard line. ETBU turned that turnover into three points as Kyle Pope nailed a 37-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 17-0 lead. Pope's field goal proved to be the only points in the third quarter.

McMurry finally got on the board with 12:44 remaining in regulation when sophomore wide receiver Simeon Neal caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Blaine Moore. Neal's touchdown catch capped a 10 play, 80-yard drive that took only 2:22 off the clock.

But the ETBU defense would hold McMurry at bay the rest of the game while George scored two more touchdowns for the Tigers to finish out the scoring.

ETBU outgained McMurry in total yards 374 to 242 (McMurry only had 47 yards on the ground). The time of possession battle was relatively even, and McMurry had three turnovers (two lost fumbles and one interception) while ETBU had two (both off of lost fumbles).

Moore, who made his first collegiate start for McMurry, completed 19 of 36 passes for a game-high 195 yards. Besides his touchdown pass to Neal, Moore threw one interception.

Neal had a huge game for McMurry as he caught a game-high six catches for a game-high 120 yards. Charvis Nash led the McMurry rushing attack as he finished with 32 yards on 11 carries.

On defense, McMurry senior defensive back Cody Collins led all players with 11 tackles. Collins also forced one fumble. McMurry's Trey Brown was the only other double-digit tackle performer in the game as he finished with 10.
