ABILENE -- Texas Lutheran continues its perfect mark in American Southwest Conference play as the Bulldogs knocked of McMurry 3-1 Friday night in an ASC West Division match at Kimbrell Arena.
The loss snaps McMurry's six-match winning streak as McMurry falls to 18-7 and 12-5 in conference play; meanwhile, Texas Lutheran improves to 18-7 and 12-5.
It was the Bulldogs' ability to win close sets that made the difference in the match. In set one, both teams were tied at 24 before Texas Lutheran won the last two volleys to take the set, 26-24. McMurry then bounced back in the second set as they won going away, 25-13, to even the match at one set apiece.
Set three was another one decided by extended play as McMurry had two set points (McMurry led 24-22) but couldn't close it out. Instead, the Bulldogs took the set 28-26 to take a two-sets-to-one lead. Texas Lutheran carried that momentum from set three into set four as they won 25-15 to clinch the match.
Junior middle blocker
Terah Brown led McMurry's attack with a team-high 14 kills. Other double-digit kill performers included junior outside hitter
Danielle Kelton, who finished with a double-double performance of 12 kills and 12 digs; and sophomore middle blocker
Mandie Moore, who finished with 11 kills.
Other top performers for McMurry included junior setter
Shannon Higgins, who finished with a team-high 32 assists; junior setter Kendal Jackson, who added 15 assists; and sophomore libero
Sarah Anding, who finished with a match-high 30 digs.
Texas Lutheran's Jessica Stetler finished with a match-high 22 kills to lead the Bulldogs to the win.
McMurry will play its final regular-season game on Saturday against Schreiner. Match time is slated for noon at Kimbrell Arena.
