McM wins 6th in a row as they top HPU, 3-1

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The McMurry volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches Tuesday night as they topped Howard Payne 3-1 in an American Southwest Conference West Division match at Brownwood Coliseum.

The 25-15, 19-25, 25-12, 25-23 win pushes McMurry to 18-6 overall and 12-4 in ASC West play; meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets fall to 14-12 and 7-10.  McMurry will return to action on Friday, Oct. 31, when they play host to ASC West leader Texas Lutheran at Kimbrell Arena.  Match time is slated for 6 p.m.

The decisive fourth set was a back-and-forth affair as both teams were tied at 14 near the midway point.  McMurry then created a little separation as they led 21-17 before Howard Payne fought back to win six out of the next seven points to give the Yellow Jackets a 23-22 lead.  But McMurry then won the next three volleys to take the set (and subsequently the match).

Junior middle blocker Terah Brown -- the reining ASC West offensive player of the week -- again led McMurry as she finished with a match-high 17 kills on an amazing .593 attack percentage (she only had one error and 27 attack attempts).  Brown also finished with 3.5 total blocks (one solo block and five block assists).

Other top performers for McMurry included senior outside hitter Erica English, who finished with nine kills and a .409 attack percentage; junior setter Shannon Higgins, who finished with a team-high 24 assists; junior outside hitter Danielle Kelton and sophomore libero Sarah Anding, who tied for a team-high with 13 digs; and junior setter Kendall Jackson, who finished with 14 assists.
