McMurry gets 10th straight win in victory over CTX, 81-66

McMurry played a better Concordia-Texas team than it had seen the past few years, however, the Tornados couldn't keep up with No. 8 McMurry and fell 81-66 Thursday at Kimbrell Arena. Tarra Richardson recorded her second-straight double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead McMurry to 12-1 overall, 9-0 in American Southwest Conference play, and extends the team's win streak to 10 games.

The Tornados kept the game close and trailed by just six at halftime 37-31. However, McMurry opened with a 13-6 run to start the second half and then used more scoring surges throughout the second half to take the win.

Several McMurry players had good games along with Richardson. Dominique Brown had her first career double-double with a season-high 11 points and a season-high 11 assists off the bench. The team had a season-high 24 assists, thanks to Brown and Amber Horton pitched in four.

Maigen Sawyer scored 13 points and had five rebounds on the night. Defensively McMurry steals with Brown leading the way with four. Concordia-Texas had 28 turnovers and eight came from its leading scorer, Kassandra Bills, who posted 21 points in the loss.

Richardson shot 10 of 19 from the field and 6 of 9 from the free-throw line. She also added two blocks, two steals and three assists. Sawyer was 6 of 13 from the field and was 1 of 5 from behind the 3-point arc.

Lanean Harris had 14, Kerrie Carter had 13 points and 11 boards and Lori Lee Beck had 10 points in the loss.

McMurry shot 47 percent for the game on 33 of 70 shooting. The Tornados had just 49 shot attempts for the contest including only 21 in the first half. The home team dominated the Tornados in the paint outscoring Concordia-Texas 54-22.

The Tornados fell to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the ASC. McMurry will play host to Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday at 1 p.m.
