McMurry begins conference play with win over Sul Ross

The McMurry University volleyball team opened up the conference season on a positive note beating Sul Ross State 30-28, 28-30, 30-18, 30-22 in Alpine at the Gallego Center Friday night.

McMurry moved to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in the American Southwest Conference West Division behind solid performances from several players. Terah Brown led McMurry in kills with 13 and posted four blocks on the night. Erica English wasn't far behind in the kills department knocking in 11. Shannon Higgins, who earned Offensive Player of the Week honors Tuesday, had another solid night with 10 kills, 35 assists and 17 digs. She led the team in hitting percentage as well with an impressive .529 mark.

Molly Fuston and Danielle Kelton each added eight kills while Blair Targac added five. Sarah Anding led the defensive effort with a match-high 32 digs. English had 17 digs to compliment her double-digit kills and Angelica Garcia had 16 digs.

McMurry hit .153 as a team and struggled with 16 service errors. However, it was enough to overcome the Lobos who hit just .030 as a team. Sul Ross' Stacy Macias and Melanie Valenciana each had 10 kills to lead the Lobos.

Sul Ross took the second game snapping a 10-game win streak by McMurry. McMurry swept through its first three opponents last weekend with 3-0 victories against Spelman College and two 3-0 wins over Methodist University.

McMurry will play host to the McMurry Volleyball Classic at Kimbrell Arena next weekend. Friday, the team will face Howard Payne for its second ASC West Division contest of the season at 2 p.m. Later Friday, McMurry will face University of Dallas at 7 p.m. before playing College of the Southwest Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
