Josh Hickman hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left and hit a free throw with one second remaining to help the East Texas Baptist Tigers rally to defeat McMurry Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena, 63-60. McMurry led 60-59 with 30 seconds remaining, but Chris Beck's pass was stolen by Tyler McKinney, who found Nick Garrett, who passed to Hickman in the corner for the game-winning 3-pointer.
McMurry had the ball with 17 seconds remaining, and Dewayne Hall had a good look with three seconds remaining from 3-point land, but the ball went in and out. Chris Gammage fell to the ground with the offensive rebound and McMurry called a timeout, but it didn't have any left. Hickman converted 1 of the 2 technical free-throws.
McMurry got the ball back with 0.01 seconds remaining, the referees did not adjust the time back to 0.4 seconds and McMurry was unable to get a shot off.
Hickman finished the game with 14 points off the bench. La'France Cooper led the Tigers with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists. Nick Garrett had 12 points and Deba Egharevba had eight points.
ETBU hit 47.9 of its shots from the field including 7 of 12 from 3-point range. McMurry, who entered the contest at well over 40 percent shooting from 3-point range, hit just 4 of 23 from behind the arc. McMurry also struggled shooting at 32.8 percent on 22 of 67 shooting.
Alex Robles and Terrance Willis led the scoring attack with 11 points apiece in the losing effort. Chris Beck had 10 points; Willis and Chris Gammage led the team in rebounds with seven.
Neither team handled the ball well, in fact, The Tigers had 28 turnovers to McMurry's 19. However, the Tigers were able to score 25 points off McMurry's miscues while McMurry turned just 17 points after turnovers.
McMurry dominated the glass as well with a 43-33 count. ETBU managed just three offensive rebounds while McMurry had 19, which led to 16 second-chance points.
McMurry will play host to LeTourneau Monday night at Kimbrell Arena – the tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
