MARSHALL - McMurry held East Texas Baptist to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half which propelled it to a 70-60 victory Tuesday night at Ornelas Gymnasium. McMurry led by just one point at half, but came out of the locker room and out-scored the Tigers 35-26 in the second period to move to 3-0 on the season.
The meeting was the first of two straight for the two clubs – ETBU will come to Abilene for McMurry's home opener Saturday. However, in the first meeting, McMurry avenged a one-point loss from a year ago. In 2006, McMurry led 30-7 before the Tigers stormed back and eventually defeated McMurry.
McMurry started out of the gate early, much like last season, leading 29-19 in the first half. However, ETBU countered with a 15-6 run to end the first half and trailed by just a point at intermission.
Alex Robles and Dewayne Hall led McMurry in scoring with 17 and 13 points respectively. Casey Jones and Chris Gammage had nine points apiece and Chris Beck had 14 rebounds on the night.
Carlos Marbot had 18 points all off 3-pointers for ETBU and Nick Garret pitched in 12 points for the Tigers in the losing effort. La'France Cooper came off the bench to post a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams hit nine 3-pointers and both had six treys in the first half. However, ETBU cooled in the second half hitting just 10 of 30 shots and only 3 of 10 from behind the arc. McMurry shot just 35.5 percent in the first half but did better in the second half with a 41.4 percent shooting performance.
McMurry also had the edge in the free-throw battle. The visitors hit 15 of 22 shots while ETBU hit only 7 of 23 from the charity stripe.
ETBU fell to 0-4 on the season and will look for its first win Saturday.
