Sul Ross QB returns from injury to lead Lobos in game-winning drive as McM falls 26-20

Box Score

Austin Davidson was injured near the end of the second quarter, however, he came back in the fourth quarter to complete the game-winning drive for Sul Ross State by completing two passes for 55 yards and watched Carlo Dominguez run in the game-sealing 3-yard score and the Lobos defeated McMurry 26-20 at Wilford Moore Stadium Saturday night.

Prior to the fourth-quarter four-play 65-yard drive that put the game out of reach, Davidson had completed just 5 of 9 passes for 72 yards. However, after McMurry had closed the scoring deficit to two points following a Josh Neaves field goal to make the score 19-17 in the Lobos favor, the senior limped on to the field and saved the day for Sul Ross.

He found Dominguez on first down for a 33-yard gain, and then T.J. Barber ran for eight yards to the McMurry 24-yard line. Davidson then completed a 21-yard pass to Jamal Groover before Dominguez finished off the drive with a 3-yard score. After Mike Van Wagner's extra point, the score was 26-17 in favor of the Lobos.

With 3:56 remaining, McMurry drove 61 yards to the Sul Ross 4-yard line. However, three straight incompletions led to another Neaves field goal from 22 yards out to make the score 26-20. McMurry didn't recover the onside kick and allowed two first downs on the final drive of the game as the Lobos were able to run out the remaining 1:40.

Barber scored two first-half touchdowns and McMurry's Dusty Thornhill caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Rashon Lewis on a deflected pass. Sul Ross entered halftime with a 13-8 lead.

Barber scored on a 3-yard run three minutes and 46 seconds into the second half to put Sul Ross up 19-8. However, Jamorian Wilkins took advantage of a poor throw from Dominguez, Sul Ross' backup quarterback, as he was being dragged to the ground and returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown. McMurry didn't convert the extra point, but cut the lead to 19-14.

Neaves' 31-yard field goal came with 4:55 remaining, but Davidson's heroics deflated McMurry's rally and Dominguez redeemed himself with the winning touchdown.

All in all, McMurry and Sul Ross equaled each other's total offensive output with 332 yards apiece. Barber had 112 yards on 32 carries while McMurry's Tristan Randle gained 129 yards on 36 carries.

The difference for McMurry was its three interceptions and failure to score touchdowns in the red zone. McMurry had to settle for two field goals after driving in side the 14-yard line and turned the ball over on downs on the Sul Ross 5-yard line in the fourth quarter as the Lobos left McMurry empty handed.

Lewis finished the game completing 12 of 32 passes and three interceptions along with his touchdown pass to Thornhill. Chris Kelley and Gene Vogelman had nine tackles in the losing effort for McMurry.

The loss moves McMurry to 2-6 on the season with a 1-5 mark in the American Southwest Conference. Sul Ross moved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the ASC.

McMurry will look to re-group on the road Saturday in Seguin with a matchup against Texas Lutheran.
