The 1974-75 Indian basketball team coached by Hershel Kimbrell posted a 22-6 record led by McMurry’s all-time leading scorer Rick Penny. Penny’s 684 points was a single-season school record for McMurry and capped a four-year career that left him the school’s all-time scoring king a 2,296 points.

In addition, McMurry established itself as the best college team in Abilene knocking off cross-town rival Hardin-Simmons twice and Abilene Christian once. The team also notched key wins over Tarleton State, Angelo State and Howard Payne while collecting McMurry’s 450th win as a program over Sul Ross State in the midst of a nine-game win streak.

That team was just the second in program history to reach the 20-win plateau and served as one of four teams that Kimbrell led to the 20-win mark in his career.
