Mel B Jowell, ‘49
After serving three years in the Army Air Corps, this native of Colorado came to McMurry and became a standout for three seasons on the Indian football teams. He was twice an all-conference selection and team captain. He was a member of the 1947 Texas Conference championship team, and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the Boys Ranch Bowl Game against Missouri Valley College.
He coached three years at McMurry before becoming an assistant coach at Odessa High School, where he coached two state championship teams. He then entered private business and retired in 1973 after 19 years with IBM Corporation. During that time, he helped develop data processing system for the White Sands Missile Range and the Apollo moon mission project. He and his wife Joy are currently living in Seabrook, where they operate their own wild flower and native grass business.
