John R. Brookshire, ’38 (Deceased)
Medley called Brookshire one of the two best passers he ever coached. Brookshire also played basketball. An Abilene native, he was an all-conference quarterback for the Tribe in 1937. He threw the winning touchdown pass to teammate Dick Dunlap to win the Cotton Bowl game against Austin College, 12-6; and was named the captain of SMU Coach Matty Bell’s weekly All-Southwest Team after a four-touchdown pass performance against Southwest Oklahoma Tech.
He taught and coached a few years in Sweetwater and worked in business in Abilene before becoming ill at a young age. He died at age 34 in a VA hospital after a lengthy illness.
