The 1959 Indians capped a four-year head coaching career for Tommy Ellis with an 8-2 record, and in the season finale McMurry’s 150th win as a program came against Abilene Christian by a score of 14-7.
The team had an NAIA all-American in Bill Gorman who helped anchor an offense that still holds the school record for rushing yards in a game with 485 against Abilene Christian.
In addition, the 1959 defensive unit set the McMurry record for interceptions in a game with six against Howard Payne. McMurry competed independently in the NAIA and notched key wins over Arizona State University and Southwest Texas State.
