Clayton Brooks was a four-year letterwinner and two-year starter at point guard for legendary McMurry basketball coach Hershel Kimbrell from 1960-1964. He excelled on and off the court at McMurry as co-captain of the Indians’ 1964 basketball team and as senior class president. In addition, Brooks was Chief McMurry; he won the Bobby Chapell Memorial Award for the most inspirational player; and he received the prestigious Martin Merit Athletic Award, which was given to the outstanding student-athlete at McMurry. Brooks averaged in double figures in points-per-game his junior and senior seasons, and he was a part of the 1962 McMurry Indian team that competed in the NAIA Championship Tournament in Kansas City against Westminster, the No. 1 team in the nation.
After he graduated from McMurry in 1965, Brooks went on to enjoy an extremely successful career as a high-school basketball coach. His first stop was Avoca High School (1967-1968) where he compiled an impressive 73-6 record over his two years and led Avoca to the state tournament both years. Avoca made it to the semifinal-round in 1967 and finished third at state in 1968. Brooks then moved on to South Garland High School, where he built one of the best programs in the state from 1969-1987. He directed a South Garland program that averaged 28 wins per year from 1976-1986, including his 1986 South Garland Squad that won a school-record 28 consecutive games en route to a No. 1 Class 5A state ranking.
Because of that team’s success, Brooks was awarded the Metroplex Coach of the Year in 1986. After South Garland, Brooks moved on to Boswell High School, where he coached from 1987-1994 and made a trip to the state semifinals in 1993. Over 30 years of coaching, Brooks compiled an incredible 705-239 record (he won 74.6 percent of the games he coached). He was also a volunteer assistant on Coach Ron Holmes’ staff during the 2005 McMurry basketball season.
