In the spring of 1924, a group of 13 young men with names like “Red,” Razzberries,” “Cisco” and “Shorty” made McMurry history, fielding the school’s first baseball team. While that team played only five games – winning four – they were the start of a proud, albeit sporadic, McMurry athletic tradition.
McMurry initially fielded a baseball team until 1928, when the University was forced to drop the program due to a lack of area colleges with baseball programs. In 1940, however, amidst the chaos of World War II, baseball returned to McMurry, if only for a short time. The sport was suspended from 1942-45 due to the war, but was reestablished in 1946 before again being dropped in the late spring of 1948.
After a 47-year absence, McMurry brought back baseball in 1996.
But the proud baseball tradition that McMurry enjoys today was paved by guys like “Red,” Razzberries,” “Cisco” and “Shorty” who suited up as McMurry Indians in the inaugural baseball season for McMurry in the spring of 1924.
