UMass Boston sweeps McMurry, Anding named to all-tournament team

The McMurry volleyball team left the Trinity River City Classic with an 0-3 mark over the weekend

SAN ANTONIO – UMass-Boston swept McMurry University and sent the team home without a win over three matches at the Trinity University River City Classic this weekend. Saturday, UMass-Boston took a 25-18, 25-23, 25-15 victory over McMurry to finish the tournament at 4-0.

UMB's Shannon Thompson had 15 kills on a .353 hitting percentage to lead the Beacons. Thompson ended up leading UMB to four wins including one over the nationally-ranked hosts, Trinity University and was named the tournament's MVP.

After falling behind one set, McMurry hit .243 in set No. 2, but the Beacons countered with a .286 mark and edged McMurry for the 25-23 win. Then, UMB's defense held McMurry to just a .111 hitting percentage in the deciding set and the Beacons cruised to a 10-point victory in set three.

Thompson's teammate Molly Rattigan added six kills while Corinne Porter and Ariel Alzenstadt had five kills apiece. In the losing effort, M.J. Vickers led with 10 kills while Bennie Smith and Bailey Marcum each had nine.

Sarah Anding had 17 digs on the match and totaled 47 for the tournament; she was named McMurry's lone representative on the all-Tournament Team.

McMurry at 0-3, will look to regroup this weekend in Sherman at the Austin College Classic where the team will play four matches between Friday and Saturday.
