McMurry comes up empty on light day two

BEREA, Ohio – McMurry University had a very light day Friday in day two of the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships, but neither of the men's team's three men competing Friday were able to pick up spots in Saturday's finals.

Terry Smith ran in the 110-meter hurdles trials Friday, however, he finished seventh in his heat out of eight runners and had the 15th-best time in the event at 14.94 seconds, which took eight to the finals scheduled for Saturday.

Both Gavan Bass and Josh Zu-Bolton had an opportunity in the 100-meter dash preliminaries, but Bass missed qualifying by five one-hundredths of a second while Zu-Bolton missed it by seven one-hundredths. Bass ran a time of 10.88 seconds in the trials while Zu-Bolton clocked a 10.90. The finals, which took eight runners is scheduled for Saturday.

Through day two, McMurry, who was projected to score more than 50 points based on seed times, remains with 6.5 points.

In Saturday's final day, Stryker Pena will participate in the high jump at 2:30 p.m. EST while Kevin Cunningham and Smith will each get a shot in the 400-meter hurdles finals at 2:20 p.m. EST. Cunningham and Smith are guaranteed to score points for McMurry as there are only eight runners left for the final event scheduled for.

In addition, Saturday both relay teams will run in the finals. The 4X100-meter relay team of Bass, Zu-Bolton, Trevon Odom and Kenneth Turner will run at 1:10 p.m. EST. Marcus Thompson, Kolby Barnhill, Smith and Cunningham will team up to compete in the 4X400-meter relay finals scheduled to close the meet at 4:55 p.m. EST.
