ABILENE, Texas – McMurry had to dodge the weather and played on three different courts, but the men's tennis team outlasted the weather and took a 6-3 win over Hardin-Simmons University to seal its second-consecutive American Southwest Conference West Division Title Thursday.
The match began at McMurry's Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center before rain forced the match to the Abilene Country Club. Play resumed on the outdoor courts before returning rain forced the matches inside. Nearly seven hours after the conclusion, the McMurry men emerged as winners by taking two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches from the Cowboys.
HSU had won nine consecutive ASC West titles from 2000-2008 before McMurry took the title last season, and Thursday the team repeated with the win giving the team a perfect 6-0 record against ASC West opponents in 2010.
Will Davis and
Bryan Rainwater teamed up to defeat Andy Cariens and Sean Strehlow on the No. 1 doubles court, 8-2.
Daniel Olivares and
Levi Cockrill paired up to defeat the Cowboys' Trey Chavez and Tony Record 8-2 on the No. 2 court. HSU's Cullen Dees and Emmaunel Navejas defeated the McMurry tandem of
Tony Williams and
Brent Abilez 8-6.
On the singles court, Rainwater, Olivares, Williams and Cockrill took wins while Cariens defeated Davis on the No.1 court and Chavez defeated Abilez on the No. 5 court.
McMurry will enter next weekend's ASC Postseason Tournament as the No. 1 seed from the west division.
In women's action, the Cowgirls defeated McMurry 8-1 to repeat as the ASC West champs on the women's side. McMurry's
Gavee Olsen and
